Scripture for Leaders
Bible Verses About Leadership
From the chaplains who serve legislators every week: the scriptures we come back to most about leadership. Every one points the same direction: the best leaders serve.
✦ The verses
For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.Mark 10:45 (ESV)
He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?Micah 6:8 (ESV)
Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.Philippians 2:3–4 (ESV)
Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety.Proverbs 11:14 (ESV)
First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way.1 Timothy 2:1–2 (ESV)
✦ A prayer for leaders
Lord, You are the King who came to serve. Make me that kind of leader.
At home, at work, in church, or in public office, keep me humble. Help me listen more than I talk, give credit more than I take it, and keep my word when it costs me.
I pray for the leaders over us: in our cities, statehouses, courts, and in Washington. Give them wisdom, integrity, and courage. Protect their families. Surround them with honest counsel.
Help all of us lead the way Jesus did: by serving. In His name, amen.
